InFocus Work Big IN24: Big in Size, Big in Performance

The aptly named Work Big IN24 is one of the entries of InFocus in the arena of business projectors. It measures in at 4 inches x 12 inches x 9.5 inches and weighs just a bit below 6 pounds. Because the IN24 is quite hefty and bulky, you probably would want to just occasionally bring it with you on your travels.

The IN24 is configured typically. You get the normal power and VGA cables. It’s just a matter of plugging the projector in an outlet, plugging your computer to the projector and you are good to go. Aside from VGA, you also have the option to use S-Video, composite video, a mini-plug for stereo output and the standard RCA phono-plug connectors. You also get a pass-through monitor connector.

However, to take advantage of these plugs, you would have to buy the cables elsewhere. The projector doesn’t come with its own carrying case as well – you have to buy one separately. You also don’t get a lens cap, and despite the assurances of InFocus that the lens is quite safe since it is recessed, you might feel uneasy moving the projector about without any lens protection.

The IN24 comes with a remote control. However, the remote control shipped with the IN24 does not have the capability to move through a slide show. So despite having the capability to control the mouse through the available USB connector, you would still need to shell out more to get a specialized remote control for that very purpose. Otherwise, you would have to settle with the basic remote.

On the other hand, while it may have some design flaws, the IN24 performs its basic function very well – project images. While the brightness of the IN24 is rated at a seemingly low 1700, testing showed that it is able to achieve 85% of that number, or about 1400. This means that the IN24 can project images even in brightly lit rooms without having to dim the lights. When it comes to contrast ratio, the IN24 delivers. It scored an impressive 472:1, which allowed the IN24 to produce crisp and vivid colors. There were some minor jitters, though not enough to be quite annoying. And just like other DLP projectors, it had the same effects in terms of colors. Yellows look a bit like mustard while green looked a lot like the yellow. Again, since the IN24 uses a single-chip DLP, these are expected.

If you are in the market for a portable projector, you might want to look elsewhere. But if your needs doesn’t include mobility, the image quality of the IN24 makes it a worthy projector.
